Learn How to Identify a Leak

If you find a water leak, please report it.

Water System Leaks

If a leak runs clear and smells like chlorine, it is likely a leak in the water system.

Leaks in the water system can be:

  • At hydrants
  • At meters
  • In distribution lines from the meter to the house*
  • In distribution lines from the main to the meter**
  • In transmission lines**

Sewer System Leaks

If a leak is cloudy and smells like sewage or storm water, it is likely a leak in the sewer system.

Leaks in the sewer system can be:

  • In pipes from the house to the main
  • In transmission lines

* Repairs are the homeowner’s responsibility.
** Repairs, in general, are the Utility’s responsibility.

Water Consumption

For more information on water consumption, visit The Villages Water Wisdom’s helpful article, How Much Is Enough?

Low water pressure may be the result of problems with your plumbing system or it may result from a problem in the pipeline serving your area. If you have low water pressure often, you may have debris in your pipes, water supply and other valves may not be open, or you may have leaks.

To address low pressure problems inside your home, you should call a plumber and have your system checked.

A sudden drop in water pressure may result from a water main leak or pump station malfunction. Typically, several homes in an area will be affected. If this occurs, crews will be dispatched to fix the problem.

Each utility operates under a consumptive use permit issued by either the St Johns Water Management District (SJWMD) or Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD).

A consumptive use permit (CUP) is a type of permit which allows water to be withdrawn from surface and groundwater supplies for reasonable and beneficial uses such as public supply (drinking water), agricultural and landscape irrigation, and industry and power generation.

Each utility is monitored by the water management districts for its consumption and as part of our compliance plan letters are generated alerting you that your monthly consumption has reached or exceeded the threshold established by the Water Management Districts as typical use for an average sized lot for your style of home. This notification serves a two fold purpose:

  • To alert our customers to identify their usage
  • To alert them to possible leaks, which may result in higher costs

This letter is automatically generated and you need not respond; should you feel that after checking your water and irrigation systems that you may be experiencing a leak at the system meter, please contact us at the numbers above and we will gladly check.

Service is only stopped for non-payment or discovery of a leak. If you are moving or selling your property, your account will be pro-rated based upon your moving date. New owners should check for leaks and adjust irrigation settings to avoid receiving high usage costs.

All customers are liable for any water use, even if you are no longer living at or using the property.

Get the facts on leaks, then see the forms in this section for water leak or unexplained high-use credit & adjustment information.
